Think. These pages delve deep into the process which we refer to as 'realizing community online'. How will the fundamental restructuring of the way we communicate and interact impactthe most basic aspects of our lives? Our exploration of community in transition is broken down into 4 broad categories: global economy, society, community, and self. subTOPICS What is it that people have
inside themselves that sustains a sense of identity? The way that
personal identity coalesces is changing. In a networked society we are
forced to confront ourselves; "Who am I?"; "Who are we?"
What makes a group of individuals
into a community? When is a network a community? How do we realize community
online, and if we do, who benefits? Who pays? Grouplinks
explores the driving factors and implications - good and bad - of change
in our communities.
Because it's the community
that's the network, not the technology, how we design our electronic
public spaces has a direct affect on social relationships and organization.
We make our networks and our networks make us." (William J. Mitchell. City
of Bits). This space is intended for people to explore, discuss and
extend theories of how social networks and organizations change when people
connect through new communications media, and how appropriate design can
affect people's successful acculturation to online communities.
At Grouplinks, our objective
is to understand how community is realized online, and how this process
is shaping our world and ourselves. The Global Economy space explores current
thinking about how communities, markets and politics interconnect in a
networked society and economy. As these connections globalize, they also
localize. An understanding of this principle is the key to establishing
new rules for equity in the allocation of power and money.
